Having just closed out its 14th year, the Backyard Improvement Program in an annual initiative of the Lead Alliance. The primary objective of the program is to support and encourage Mount Isa families, schools and childcare facilities to make lead-safe improvements to their yards and grow healthy produce.
The 2025 Backyard Improvement Program once again brought the Mount Isa community together to create safer, greener and healthier outdoor spaces. Delivered annually by the Lead Alliance, the program encourages families, schools and childcare centres to make lead-safe yard improvements while also supporting the growth of fresh, healthy produce. These goals reinforce two key Lead Alliance messages: cover bare soil and eat well. It is anticipated that the positive changes inspired by the program will reduce the risk of elevated lead levels of children and improve the overall health of the Mount Isa Community.
This year’s program wrapped up with an award ceremony held at the John Middlin Centre, where participant efforts were celebrated and prizes awarded. The creativity, effort and pride shown across the submitted projects highlight the community’s ongoing commitment to improving the safety and wellbeing of local children.
